I had another fashion shoot this weekend with with wardrobe and accessories provided by Devin White (Alon’Dria) an up and coming local designer here in Dallas. Devin is very creative and funny as hell. We shot at a small studio in Arlington (Studio Arlington) with model Brittney B (from Model Mayhem).
The term “professional” is thrown around quite a bit and there is some debate on what it does (or should) mean in the photography world. I would venture to say, after watching this video, that you might want to be very careful about using it as a label if it in fact is not true…
The post processing of images has been taking place for many years. Photoshop did not come up with the concept but rather made it easier to do in the digital world. Each photographer has his/her own idea of what and how much post goes into an image. There are many that love the Barbie Doll (plastic skin) look they can achieve with Photoshop while others prefer a more “real” or “gritty” feel.
I personally don’t care for plastic skin. I prefer a little more natural look to my images. That does not mean however that I don’t touch them up. The key for me is removing imperfections and finding that fine line between what I feel is a publishable image and what has a natural look to it.
If I haven’t mentioned this before..I do “all” my own touch-ups. I know many photographers that send out their work. This is how they do it. I don’t do it that way (yet). I have a certain look that I want to achieve and for the time being prefer to keep my touch-ups in house. I am sure there are several Photoshop guru’s out there that can do it…I like doing it myself and I don’t have to worry about my touch-up guy being available or how long it will take him/her to get to my images.
I also from time to time work on other photographers images. The images below (couresty of Jason Christopher Photography) show the before and after (post) of a swimsuit shot.
I normally don’t blog about bodies, lenses, and accessories. However, those of you out there that rent lenses on a regular basis you might want to check out this site (www.borrowlenses.com).
If you are in a small market (I’m told my market, Dallas, is just that) you may run into a situation where renting a lens for a day can cost upwards of $40 to $45 (which is the case here). The same lens (most recently a 70-200 L 2.8) though borrowlenses.com ran me $71 for “10″ days. If you include the round trip shipping (fedex for me was about $40 I think) you come out to a whopping $11 a day! The longer your rent…the better the deal. 14 days came out to be about $8.5 per day.
I’ve rented from them a few times now and will continue to so. If you are planning your projects ahead of time and know when you’ll need the lenses you can certainly save yourself some overhead. The lenses have always been on time and always in perfect condition.
The idea was to shoot at an upscale restaurant in Dallas. However, frozen pipes (then busted pipes) made for a somewhat wet location…and relocation of the shoot. Models, Fashions, and Photographers relocated to Anderson Studio’s in Dallas. Once again we were working with Oscar Fierro’s designs.

Back in December I had the opportunity to shoot Oscar Fierro’s Designs at the new Opera House in Dallas. The foyer had glass walls from floor to ceiling. It was a great location for natural light fashion photography.

You can find inspiration just about anywhere. The internet is a fantastic source these days. Today I found a wonderful site full of inspiration! The site is lookbook.nu. This site showcases individual styles from…individuals. Many of the styles thrown together are very inexpensive and very creative. From the website:
“What is LOOKBOOK.nu?
LOOKBOOK.nu is an international social experiment in style. It was inspired by street fashion blogs like the Sartorialist as well as “What are you wearing today?” forum threads across the internet. ”
The look and model above is from a lookbook.nu member referred to as “Cookies Typhaine A” from France. You can see more of her style on her blog.
